There is a commercial driver available for Mac OS X called “ VideoGlide” that provides compatibility with a fair number of these devices (for full list click here). Many “Windows Only” USB video digitizing devices are actually based on a standard 28xx video chipset. If you are having problems getting a Prolific based adapter running in Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) or 10.8 (Mountain Lion) you can try this. In addition, many inexpensive no-name USB-Serial adapters make use of the Prolific PL2303 chipset and there is an open source driver available here which may work with these devices. On the Macintosh, we have had excellent results with adapters from Tripplite (formerly Keyspan), IOGear, FTDI and TRENDnet, since these manufactures provide up-to-date drivers compatible with most newer versions of Mac OS X.
